Position: Director, Systems Engineering
Reporting to the VP Hardware Platforms, the Director of Systems Engineering will manage the hardware development group at Palm. This group includes the EE, RF, CAD, Audio, Power, Imaging and accessory teams - approximately 40 engineers; responsible for the hardware design and execution of all Palm devices.
Duties/Responsibilities:
As an experienced engineering manager, the Director will lead and coach the teams, recruit and manage to maintain a world class, focused and motivated hardware delivery team.
A strong background and broad understanding of product integration is required to ensure projects and schedules can be committed to and delivered by the team.
On top of product delivery, this position will drive forward looking technology investigations and steer the teams to maintain technology roadmaps.
Benchmarking, identifying key metrics and driving the engineering teams to aggressive targets is vital for success.
The implementation of processes, tools, systems and initiatives is a key function.
The role will interface with many other internal functional groups including the executive team, program management, marketing, software, mechanical, sustaining; as well as external parties such as ODMs and technology suppliers.

Background Hardware Engineering and Product Development
Proven track record in product delivery
Successfully managed large engineering groups
Strategic, decisive and proactive leadership style – bringing positive energy to the team
Skills/Experience:
Required :
10 years experience in hardware design and product delivery
Design for cost | Design for Manufacture
Hardware Design – baseband, RF, digital, analog, audio, CAD design skills
Strong analytical skills
A wizard with word | powerpoint | excel | project | outlook
A passion for technology and insight into future trends (Wi-max, UWB, etc)
Desired :
Relationships with key technology vendors in the mobile space (TI, QCOMM, Marvell, etc)
Experience of GSM, CDMA, 3G cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth wireless standards
Smartphone design experience
Some software implementation experience a plus
Education:
BA in EE related engineering field
BSEE or higher a plus
Travel:
International travel will be required.
